This set of porcelain screen was a birthday gift featuring the figures of extra shows called “Rao Tou opera†attached to Jiangzhe Region (including present-day area of eastern Hubei, Zhejiang province)’s local opera during the Qing Dynasty. The characters should be read from upper right to lower left, so as the order of the images on the screens:
Upper part images (from right to left):
- "Wishing you long life and always being a trusted official of the imperial government.
(note: In ancient times, these sentences used to be congratulatory messages presented to the official whose birthday was being celebrated)."
- "In the past years, we led the army to conquer the barbarians in the wildness. Today, we are riding horses together and proudly returning to the imperial capital." (note: This historical event refers to Yao Qi, an imperial official of the Han Dynasty, led his army with his son to suppress barbarians in the southern area, and afterwards returned to the capital together.
- "There is no need to rush to predict outcomes through fortune telling, it is still easier to get fame than others even on bad days." (note: This poem was cited from a poem created by Liu Kezhuang, a Song Dynasty poet.
- "When Guo Ziyi was in Yinzhou, he once saw a gorgeous carriage on which a beautiful fairy sitting inside the splendid tent when he looked up to the sky on the day of Qixi Festival. As the carriage landed from the sky, Guo Ziyi hurriedly knelt down to pray and wish: Please bestow me with wealth and longevity! The fairy smiled and said, "You will be blessed with abundant wealth, and longevity." then the carriage slowly rose up and disappeared from the sky. Before long, Guo Ziyi became a high-ranking official, rich and noble, famous and long-lived." (note: This is a folk tale about "Guo Ziyi", one of the greatest military general of the Tang Dynasty, who ended the An Lushan Rebellion and participated in expeditions against the Uyghur Khaganate and Tibetan Empire. Afterwards, he has been immortalized as the god of riches and happiness ever since them.)
- "Many officials participated in the celebration together, which was well known to thousands of households. All three successive generations of them were honored and admired by thier later generations."
- "People from different places have a deep yearning for his majesty can suppress evil forces."

Good, some minor wear, hinges of later replacement, metal rails attached to the back and additional rail to hang on the wall.
