Before Samuel Colt could establish foreign sales agents, his patented designs were being manufactured all over Europe. To avoid litigation, Colt had inspectors in Europe that would examined manufactured pistols, and if acceptable quality, the firearms would be marked as authorized by Colt. Many experts claim not all pistols that were examined were marked accordingly. Rather a representative example of a lot was examined. At the start of the Civil War, the South needed all types of small arms. Many of these copies worked their way back to the states. This example shows no external markings other then the serial number 679. Seven inch smoothbore,.36 caliber round barrel, plain cylinder, brass frame and back strap, scarse square back trigger guard represented, with one piece walnut grips.
