Native American, Northern United States / Canada, Inupiaq or Yupik people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A shamanic wood dance mask with rods projecting outward with additional carvings. The main mask face is encircled by an otter, and the projections symbolize hunting and fishing - small figures in kayaks with fish and tools. These masks were traditionally made under the direction of shamans and had different functions- some might be intended to wear as masks during ceremonies and others may be made to hang in the home for healing or to bring fortune during hunts. Mounted in a modern display case. Size of mask: 20" W x 18" H (50.8 cm x 45.7 cm); case: 3.5" L x 23.5" W x 25.5" H (8.9 cm x 59.7 cm x 64.8 cm)
