West Africa, Yoruba or Hausa, ca. 1960. Wow! This impressive royal ensemble includes a voluminous Dandogo Agbada/Babban Riga - a "robe of honor" created to signify a chief's power, influence, and success - as well as the coordinating shirt worn beneath and "fancy pants". Each piece is comprised of fine cotton threads presenting a striated pattern in a gorgeous color combination of magenta, aqua, cream, and black - the fabric woven in narrow strips on a hand loom and skillfully sewn together. In addition, each piece is extensively embroidered with threads creating diagonal motifs through the eyelet holes. Additional creamy beige embroidered motifs further embellish the garments (more below). Size: pants - 35" L x 26" W (88.9 cm x 66 cm); shirt - 35" L x 53" W (88.9 cm x 134.6 cm); agbada (robe) - 48" L x 76" W (121.9 cm x 193 cm)
The agbada is covered with extensive cream-hued embroidered motifs - both geometric and figural (hearts in places) - that create an intriguing asymmetric decorative program on the front and back. The shirt presents elaborate medallions arranged in a symmetrical design on the bodice, a larger embroidered medallion on the back, as well as complex borders highlighting two pockets and the collar. Finally, the pants present coordinating decorative embroidery on the lower legs.

Some age wear and slight stains to the cream-hued embroidery work as this is a vintage piece (ca. 1960) with a few loose threads to the woven fabric. Minor wear to hemline of the pants.
