Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. Finely carved from a beautiful dark green veined serpentine stone, a standing deity figure, either male or non-gender specific, presenting a characteristically u-shaped head with an expressive visage comprised of large, drilled, almond-shaped eyes which likely contained inlays (perhaps obsidian or a different greenstone), elegantly arched incised brows, a relatively naturalistic nose, an open mouth with lips curled into a feline expression and partially drilled perforations at the corners suggesting Olmecoid influence, laugh lines joining nose to the corners of his lips, gently contoured facial planes, pronounced ears, and a cap or cap-like coiffure atop the forehead. The sculpture displays a muscular body with modeled surfaces suggestive of biceps, triceps, pectorals, and abdominal muscles. The fingers are delineated via string cut lines as well. Size: 10.625" H (27 cm); 10.25" H (26 cm) on included custom stand.
Teotihuacan was at one time the largest city in the Pre-Columbian world, famous for its pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon) as well as the Great Compound with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (aka Temple of the Plumed Serpent) punctuating the Avenue of the Dead. Stone figures like this example are perhaps the best known works of Teotihuacan art. Examples like this figure from Teotihuacan often have idealized features (rather than individual depictions) and calm expressions, with simple lines used economically in order to create powerful effigies without an overuse of detail.
A similar dark-veined serpentine Teotihuacan standing figure sold for $137,500 at Sotheby's New York, May 14, 2018, Lot 134.
