Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Sinu Valley, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A delightful cast tumbaga finial in the form of a bird, perhaps a hummingbird, standing upon a small perch with an elongated beak, annular eyes, tucked wings, a flared tail, and tubular legs. Replete with fine detail, the splendid figure is adorned with several stripes of a braided pattern that extend from his beak, along the top of his head to his back, almost like a type of crest. His body is comprised of skillfully rendered, openwork circles, while an arched pattern embellishes his tail. The figure is gilded, with much of that original surface remaining, giving it a shining appearance. Size: 2.8" L x 0.7" W x 1.5" H (7.1 cm x 1.8 cm x 3.8 cm)
An item like this one would have perhaps been used for ritual ceremonies in which shamans and possibly rulers consumed powerful hallucinogens to induce a religious transformation into animals or magical beasts. Birds were a popular theme in ancient Mesoamerican art as they were thought to be messengers of the gods who were able to traverse through all realms of existence as well as the afterlife. An object like this example aided in the months to years long process through which a shaman completed the animalistic transformation. Condition
Miniscule loss to one part of openwork circle on the front of proper left wing. Otherwise, excellent with lovely patina.
