William H. Bailey (American, b. 1930). "Still Life - Deruta" casein on paper, 1983. Signed with initials and dated 'WB 1983' (lower right); signed again and dated again '(c) Bailey 1983' (on the reverse). A haunting still life presenting a variety of everyday vessels situated upon a ledge by American artist William H. Bailey. Although Bailey's compositions appear to be created from direct observation, the artist actually creates from sketches and his memory. In his words, "I don't like categories. I have been variously described as a realist and as a classicist. The paintings I do are not from life—they're made up, but they're made up from real situations," Bailey has said. "All these things come from my memory really." Size: 16.5" L x 20" W (41.9 cm x 50.8 cm)
Bailey received his MFA under famous Modernist Josef Albers at Yale University. Today he lives and works in Umbertide, Italy and New Haven, Connecticut. He was named Professor Emeritus of Art at Yale University, and his work is in the esteemed collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., and the Art Institute of Chicago. Among Bailey's inspirations are Italian still life painter Giorgio Morandi and pre-Renaissance artist Piero della Francesca.
