Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A stunning 88% (equivalent to 22K+) gold pendant containing a teardrop shaped amethyst stone. The bezel has a raised, zigzag border and a register of rope patterning surrounding the top of the stone. A granulated ball is positioned at the base of the broad loop that is surmounted on the top. The amethyst stone is highly polished and is a semi-translucent lilac-purple hue. The pendant is strung on a modern cord with a silver-plated lobster clasp, making this a wearable piece of Romans artistry! Amethyst was a protective stone in Greek and Roman culture, which resembled the color of wine. Size of pendant: 0.7" L x 0.25" W (1.8 cm x 0.6 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); gold quality: 88% (equivalent to 21K+); weight: 2.2 grams
