Eastern Mediterranean/Greek, ca. 4th century BCE to 2nd century CE. A striking necklace composed of fifty ancient glass beads, most of them of the style known as eye beads or evil eye beads, on a modern cord with modern sterling silver clasp to make it wearable. These beads are mainly navy blue with white "eyes" and are made using the mosaic technique, with long rods of colorful glass cut into segments; two are dark green and one is white with blue and white applied "eyes". A few have red and yellow/gold colored trails of glass on their surfaces. Two are paler blue, matte, and have a vertically ribbed, globular form. Length of strand: 20.5" L (52.1 cm); size of largest bead: 0.7" W (1.8 cm)
The "eye-bead" style was popular throughout the ancient world, believed to ward off the "evil eye", and although they were manufactured mainly in the Eastern Mediterranean, they found their way along trade routes throughout the ancient Old World - for example, one has been found at Manthai, a coastal town and ancient harbor in northern Sri Lanka, another at Arikamedu, a southern Indian city known for its trade with the Romans.
