Maurice de Vlaminck (French, 1876-1958). Original lithograph entitled "Allainville Under the Snow". Signed in the plate at the lower left. Copyright, 1951 by E.C.G., Paris, France. A superb original lithograph in colors by French artist Maurice de Vlaminck who along with Andre Derain and Henri Matisse is considered to be a pioneer of the Fauve movement, a group of modernists who embraced an innovative style that embraced vibrant color from 1904 to 1908. Vlaminck was also a master of composition as exemplified by the dramatic landscape depicted in "Allainville Under The Snow" which truly captures the blustery nature of winter. Size: 18.25" W x 15" H (46.4 cm x 38.1 cm); full sheet measures 29.875" W x 22" H (75.9 cm x 55.9 cm)
Vlaminck participated in the controversial and legendary 1905 Salon d'Automne exhibition. Upon viewing the boldly colored canvases of Henri Matisse, André Derain, Albert Marquet, Kees van Dongen, Charles Camoin, Jean Puy, and Vlaminck, the art critic Louis Vauxcelles disparagingly called the painters "fauves" (meaning wild beasts), thereby naming their movement which became known as Fauvism.
