Vladimir Kraynyk (Canadian, born in Russia, studied in Ukraine, b. ) "Blast" oil on canvas, 2017. Signed and dated on verso. A striking abstract painting by Vladimir Kraynyk, appropriately titled "Blast". Kraynyk was born in Russia, trained in Ukraine, and is currently based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Both a painter and a muralist, Kraynyk seamlessly blends traditional with contemporary techniques to create his powerful, emotive compositions. Kraynyk's influences range from Classical, Renaissance, and Baroque to those of 20th century Modernism. The twisting forms of "Blast" which appear to be in dynamic motion suggest the Baroque influence of Bernini - while the rich palette and intense contrasts between light and dark suggest the influence of fellow Baroque master, Caravaggio - and the lush painterly passages conjure masterful gestures of Abstract Expressionism. Kraynyk has affirmed this blend of influences from various time periods, "In culture in general, there is no linear progress but rather a much more complicated non-linear chart trajectory." Size: 48" L x 65" W (121.9 cm x 165.1 cm)
Vladimir Kraynyk was born in Russia and went to school in Ukraine, where in his teens he became interested in graffiti, which was making a delayed arrival from Europe and America onto the post-Soviet youth sub-cultural sphere. Shortly after, Vladimir’s family moved to Canada, where he is currently living and creating. Vladimir continued with his passion for spray painting, which gradually morphed into a serious pursuit of Fine Arts studies in a proper sense, specifically oil painting. He attended the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, while simultaneously developing his studio practice, studying art history and branching out into philosophy and general history. It became apparent to Vladimir that it is impossible to do art without understanding the broader intellectual context of our own and previous epochs. Since graduating in 2014, he has continued to create art independently and in parallel doing self-directed research in philosophy.
