Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 500 to 700 CE. An incredibly vibrant and intricate handwoven wool textile using the slit tapestry technique, in cotton and camelid fibers such as alpaca or llama. The textile is mounted on a modern black cloth to highlight the colorful threads- all naturally dyed in hues of red, blue, green, ochre, pink, mauve, white, and tan - amazingly well preserved for their age! The horizontal registers have curvilinear, stepped, and geometricized motifs with highly abstract faces and bodies of zoomorphs and anthropomorphic beings. Note the cat or monkey creature in red on the lower ochre yellow ground, and the simple faces may be the simplified visage of the deity Ai Apaec. In ancient Andean societies, textiles served myriad functions and held an important social, political, religious, and aesthetic value. This is an unbelievably well-preserved example that is ready to be displayed. Size (textile): 26" L x 20" W (66 cm x 50.8 cm); (modern backing): 27.5" L x 22.5" W (69.8 cm x 57.2 cm)
