Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Viru culture, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. A wonderful pottery vessel presenting a bulbous body and conical spout, all sitting upon an applied discoid foot and enveloped in a vibrant orange-hued slip. A tubular handle connects the base of the spout to the verso of a protruding head of a shaman on the other side of the vessel. The ancient visage gazes forward from huge eyes with incised pupils, displaying a prominent, pointed nose, a slender mouth held in a gentle smile, and "C"-shaped ears, all capped by a double-banded head adornment. His shaman horn projects from the proper right side of his head. Though no longer functioning, this beautiful example would have previously served as a whistling vessel when one blew into the spout. Size: 7.2" Diameter x 6.6" H (18.3 cm x 16.8 cm)
