Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. mid-20th century CE. A beautiful sterling silver, coral, and turquoise ring featuring a large kachina (katsina) figure, representing a spiritual deity. The ring is wearable with a wide band decorated with granulated, swirling, and rope pattern details. The kachina is soldered to the band with a flat back that is stamped with "STERLING" and the maker mark "B" (possibly for the Navajo artist Billy Slim). The kachina is hand-worked with fine details, such as small legs with fringed pant legs, protruding from a skirt. The figure holds a feather in one hand, and a granulated ball, perhaps representing a rattle in the other hand. The rectangular face protrudes outward with openwork eyes. The headdress is elongated with curved feathers around the turquoise stone. The turquoise and coral are set within saw tooth bezels, adding a nice pop of color to the silver. Size of Kachina: 2.5" L x 1" W (6.4 cm x 2.5 cm); opening size: 0.78" Diameter (2 cm); quality of silver: 92.7%; total weight: 27.3 grams; US ring size 9.5.
The Katsinim are supernatural beings who live in the high mountains of the San Francisco Peaks above traditional Hopi territory and speak to the Hopi through costumed dance and song. These dancers emerge from the round ceremonial kivas that are at the center of their communities, singly or in groups, and dance to the music of drums, rattles, and song. In imitation and representation of them are Katsina figures (katsina dolls, katsin-tihu). Kachinas are usually associated with the Hopi, however, the Navajo and Zuni Pueblo of New Mexico also developed their own rich history of kachina making as well.
