Caribbean, Haiti, 20th century, signed "Sou Sou" on lower right. A vintage Haitian folk art painting depicting a busy agricultural village. Native peoples dressed in colorful garments amble along diagonal paths carrying baskets of produce on their heads, while others work the land. In addition, several hatch-roofed vernacular homes and palm trees dot the verdant landscape. A vibrant scene, replete with impressive details, brilliant hues befitting this Caribbean land, and a balanced composition. A wonderful painting that continues the tradition of Haitian folk art. However, unlike the works of Philome Obin, Wilson Bigaud, Castera Bazile, and Rigaud Benoit, Sou Sou does not focus on historical events or Voodoo rituals. Instead, the artist presents an idyllic Caribbean genre scene. Size: 8" L x 9.5" W (20.3 cm x 24.1 cm)
