Native American, Northwest Coast, Haida, mid 20th century. Signed by respected carver Rufus Moody (b. 1923) on the verso, a finely carved argillite pendant, ovoid in form and presenting an orca or killer whale, symbolic of protection, longevity, family, community, and harmony. The carving is set in a decorative nickel brass surround and strung on a cord to be wearable. The orca is believed to protect travelers and guide them home when appropriate. Their association with family stems from the fact that they spend their entire lives with the same pod and raise their calves with tender care. Size: 1.4375" W x 2.25" H (3.7 cm x 5.7 cm)
Alternatively, the killer whale is also known as the "Lord of the Ocean" who serves as guardian of the ocean. The Haida believe that killer whales are related to humans, and that when a human drowns, killer whales transform the human into a killer whale.
Rufus Moody comes from a long line of respected Haida carvers with a distinct signature style. Both his father, Arthur Moody, and his grandfather, Thomas Moody, are renowned Haida carvers. Rufus Moody himself is a world-renowned artist, and his argillite carvings may be found in esteemed museums, fine art galleries, and private collections.
