Central Asia, Afghanistan or Pakistan, Kuchi (Kochi) people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A beautiful traditional cap made from brightly woven textile with brass ornaments and coins adorning the exterior. This ceremonial hat is slightly domed and fits like a skull cap, with a brass finial that protrudes from the top. Brass chains with diamond shaped plates and bezels containing colorful glass and lapis stones are arranged around the rest of the crown! Brass ornaments, charms, dangling bells, earrings, pendants, and Afghani coins dating from the 1930s CE, and glass beads further embellish the brim. The textile itself is a vibrant geometric pattern in pink, blue, green, yellow, black, and white with a cotton lining sewn to the interior. Colorful clothing and jewelry were worn by the Kuchi people as ceremonial dress for weddings or other celebrations. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 5" H (16.5 cm x 12.7 cm)
According to Richard Tapper's article, "Who are the Kuchi? Nomad self-identities in Afghanistan" published in the Journal of Royal Anthropological Institute, "'Kuchi', an Afghan Persian word meaning 'those who go on migrations', is the common generic term, used by both Afghans and foreigners, for the nomads of Afghanistan, as it has been for many decades. Most if not all the nomads, and indeed many long-settled former nomads, now acknowledge this name, yet in the 1960s and 1970s few of those so labelled used the term for themselves."
