Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A beautiful earring formed from thick wires of 86.4% silver and a leaded bronze pendant with openwork loops. The earring features 4 wires at the center that twist around one another and gradually taper and fuse together forming the narrow terminals - the ends may have been originally longer with a hooked tip, to fit through an ear lobe and secure in place. Viking men and women wore silver accessories like this example as signs of wealth. The pendant is cast from leaded bronze into a twisting shape with a slightly raised face and flat verso, two open loops for suspension at either end. Size (earring): 0.75" Diameter x 0.35" W (1.9 cm x 0.9 cm); silver quality: 86.4%; weight: 4.8 grams; (leaded bronze pendant): 1.42" L x 0.40" W (3.6 cm x 1 cm)
