Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 11th century CE. A beautiful and wearable pendant in the form of Mjolnir, the legendary hammer of the lightning god Thor. The hammer has a slender handle decorated with incised spirals, an integral knotted loop, and a separate suspension ring with a segmented body and coiling terminals. The triangular hammer head boasts hammered embellishments including a pair of crescents flanking the tip of a rhombus on the obverse side as well as two triangles separated by three small dots on the verso. Viking men and women would wear accessories like this example as a sign of religious belief and visual wealth. They were often times used as currency or deposited in rivers as offerings to the gods, though they were also buried with their owners upon death. Black-waxed cotton necklace strand included. Size (pendant): 0.625" W x 1.95" H (1.6 cm x 5 cm); size (pendant w/ suspension ring): 2.875" H (7.3 cm); size (necklace strand): 21.75" L (55.2 cm); quality of silver: 98%; total weight: 14.5 grams.

Condition
Wearable as shown. Suspension ring still moves. Hammer pendant and suspension ring are ancient, and necklace strand is modern. Very slight bending to overall form of hammer and suspension ring, with light softening to some hammered details, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits within some recessed areas, and great patina throughout.
