The hammer itself is decorated with an incised geometric motif of woven zig-zag lines forming diamond-shapes with central circles and an additional 4 to 5 circles on both peripheries of the handle. Bearing a lustrous surface in hues of silver and gold with a rich green and russet patina, this necklace pendant is an exceptional example from Viking culture! Silver quality: 90% silver, 9% copper. Size: 1.125" L x 0.75" W (2.9 cm x 1.9 cm); Weight: 6.7 grams.
Thor's hammers were worn as religious amulets throughout the Viking era. Some even made it to the Christian era; there is actually a famous example of a Thor's hammer amulet from Fossi, Iceland that was rendered into the form of a Cross. Scholars believe that Thor's hammers were made to be worn suspended from brooches, and most examples that we know from graves in Scandinavia belonged to women. The important Viking metalworking shops correspond to their great trading ports and proto-urban centers - Birka, Helgo, Sigtuna, and Lund in Sweden, Ribe, Haithabu (Hedeby), and Fyrkat in Denmark, and Kaupang and Trondheim in Norway.

Expected light fading of detail with some abraded areas, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent, intact, and wearable with nice patina.
