Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A fabulous pendant formed from high-grade (98%) silver in the rough form of Mjolnir, the legendary hammer wielded by equally-mythical lightning god Thor. The pendant has a thick handle shaped from tightly-bound silver wire, an oblong, double-ended hammer head, and a twisted wire coiled several times in-between. This pendant deviates from traditional norms by sculpting the front of the hammer face with the heads of Skoll and Hati, a pair of magical wolf brothers who endlessly chase the horses that pulled the chariots containing Sol and Mani (the sun and moon) through the sky. An ovoid suspension ring allows the piece to be worn on a necklace strand as a pendant. A fabulous and incredibly rare example of good and evil in Viking mythos! Leather necklace strand included. Size (pendant): 0.7" W x 1.7" H (1.8 cm x 4.3 cm); size (pendant w/ ring): 2.25" H (5.7 cm); size (necklace strand): 21.75" L (55.2 cm); quality of silver: 98%; total weight: 11.3 grams.
The children of the Great Wolf Fenrir who is in turn a child of Loki, brother of Thor and god of mischief, Skoll and Hati are said to bring forth Ragnarok (Viking apocalypse) upon catching their prey.

Condition
Wearable as shown. Suspension ring still moves within hole. Silver pendant and suspension ring are ancient, and leather necklace strand is modern. Very slight bending to overall form, with light softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits within some recessed areas, and great age-related patina throughout.
