Northern Europe, Viking/Norse, ca. 10th century CE. A breathtaking gilded bronze and silver or heavily silvered (88% silver) fish pendant with white enamel details, featuring four panels of interlaced Mammen Style zoomorphic and bird motifs. The hollow-formed pendant has lateral holes for stringing, a flat underside, and a notch at one end to represent the fish's open mouth. The Mammen style grew out of the Jellinge style. Its name derives from a richly decorated axe-head found in a grave in Mammen, Denmark decorated with both pagan and Christian motifs. The Mammen style arose in the 900s and existed until about 1000. Note that this piece includes animal motifs; however, when oriented with the notched end at the top, the negative space between them forms a Cross. Size: 2.125" L x 0.7" W (5.4 cm x 1.8 cm) Precious metal compositon: Top - areas of 44-57% silvering surrounding the gilding (1.4 to 37% gold) atop a bronze body. Boom - 88% silver or heavily-silvered (88% silvered) bronze. Weight: 23.3 grams.
