Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. An impressively long and thin free blown glass vial of the early Imperial Period. The silhouette it creates is striking in that from the teardrop shaped rounded lower end it narrows and then widens about 2/3 of the way up only to taper once again and widen ever so slightly at the rim. There is very faint iridescence on the interior but in general the glass is a translucent pale aubergine. A vial like this would have held precious liquids, and probably had some kind of stopper material in it originally. Size: 5.12" High (13 cm)
Provenance: private New York, USA collection acquired on the European art market, circa 1970s to 1980s by Mr. S.A. for his private collection and kept in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Thence by descent, New York, 1998
