Pre-Columbian, Caribbean or Florida, Taino / Arawak People, ca. 11th to 15th century CE. A heavy stone zemi (sometimes cemi) figure, carved from a dense, dark brown/black rock, featuring a distinctive, large-nostriled nose, deep-set eyes, and a grinning open mouth. Around the "forehead" of the figure is a carved band of elaborately incised, stylized geometric motifs. The stone has three cardinal points, known as the "Yocahu Bagua Maorocoti," or the Creator, Yaya. These three points are the sky/sacred mountain peak where Yaya lives; Coabey, the underworld; and Goiz, the land of living people. Size: 7.75" L x 4.25" W x 4.5" H (19.7 cm x 10.8 cm x 11.4 cm)
Taino art is comprised of many religious objects associated with the worship of "zemis" - a term referring to deities, ancestors, or earth spirits believed to be inhabited by powerful spirits. Owners of zemi figures traditionally honored them with offerings of food or precious gifts. Each Zemi had its own identity and name, personality, distinct characteristics, and powers.
Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired from a Pre-Columbian art show, Pasadena, California, USA in the mid-1990s
