Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz (also Vera Cruz) culture, ca. 7th to 10th century CE. A remarkable handmade pottery figure of a standing female priest wearing a large, square skirt tied to her waist in an elaborate bow and painted in hues of brown, red, and black. Depicted barefoot with both big toes raised, the ancient figure appears to be shrugging as she extends her arms outwards from her square shoulders, bends them at the elbow, and faces her palms upwards. Her expressive visage displays slender, ovoid eyes with sizable pupils, a prominent pointed nose, and a full-lipped frown positioned slightly open to reveal a top row of finely incised black teeth. Atop a full head of short black hair, an elaborate headdress caps her huge head featuring a tubular rim with a diagonally-oriented incised pattern, three petite tapered embellishments between the rim and top, a flat top with a lattice work design, and a curved tube-shaped object as a type of finial. Size: 11.5" W x 14.25" H (29.2 cm x 36.2 cm)
She is additionally adorned by two armbands, a pair of bracelets, a thick, knotted necklace that hangs between her conical breasts, and enormous ear spools connected by a chin strap.
Excavations near the modern Mexican town of Remojadas have revealed two types of impressive, detailed pottery figures from the Veracruz period: the Sonrientes, the joyous "smiling faces", and figures like this one, more serious, mostly adult figures, with elaborate costumes, themes, and sometimes props that all seem to point towards religious or political ceremonies. These figures are often found with the bodies smashed into pieces and the heads largely intact - they were ritually destroyed as burial offerings. Their clothing suggests that they depict people of import in society, maybe priests or nobility.
