Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast Mexico, Vera Cruz (Veracruz), Remojadas style, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A remarkable pottery head of an old man representing the Mesoamerican figure known as Huehueteotl or the Old God. Crowned by a bulbous headdress with applied decoration, the ancient deity exhibits a detailed visage comprised of a heavy brow above slender eyes with pierced pupils, a sizeable, projecting nose, and fleshy lips. His advanced age is represented by deeply incised striations that adorn his cheeks and nose, intended to represent layer upon layer of wrinkling and sagging flesh. A pointed beard extends from his chin, while a pair of huge, rectangular ears flank the head, both embellished by applied ear adornments. Liberal remains of yellowish pigment further decorate the piece. Size: 7.4" W x 7.5" H (18.8 cm x 19 cm)
