Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Gulf Coast, Veracruz, Classic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 900 CE. An outstanding hollow-molded terracotta standing figure with separately made articulated arms. The visage presents an endearing laughing face with almond shaped eyes, a petite nose, and a wide-open mouth revealing filed teeth. The face is embellished with yellow pigmentation, as well as red pigment around the eyes and on top of the headdress. The headdress itself is a work of art - large and presenting two applied spirals that flank a central feather motif. Round ear ornanments incised with patterns that resemble motifs found on seashells adorn the ears. The torso and limbs are also skillfully rendered with delineated fingers and toes. What's more, the figure wears a 'beaded' necklace with a dangling pendant and a 'beaded' belt or trim, but the sculptor made certain that the figure's belly button and genitalia are revealed. Size: 6" W x 11.5" H (15.2 cm x 29.2 cm); 11.75" H (29.8 cm) on included custom stand.
This type of figure is known as a sonriente. Sonrientes, or "smiling faces", are the most famous pottery from this period in Veracruz (known as Remojadas for its keystone archaeological site). They depict wide, smiling, childlike faces, often with teeth showing, like this example. Smiling faces are very rare in Mesoamerican art, but in Remojadas and the surrounding area, Sonrientes figures were popular, presenting a mystery. Some archaeologists have suggested that the smiles suggest the consumption of an alcoholic beverage known as pulque, or perhaps the use of hallucinogenic drugs; others argue that the Sonriented were intended to represent performers.
