Valerie Von Sobel (Hungarian-American, b. 1940). "Vicious Circle" assemblage, 2019. "Vicious Circle" is an imaginative assemblage sculpture by Valerie Von Sobel, a contemporary artist who fled her native Hungary in 1956 during the Communist era. Now six decades later, Sobel is an accomplished artist who relishes "the magic of assemblage and mixed media". For "Vicious Circle" Von Sobel juxtaposed a peculiar array of curious found objects: a zoomorphic skull with teeth emerging from the jawline and a shiny metallic orb in its mouth, two identical metallic orbs adorning the swiveling base below, and a syringe protruding from its nasal cavity; delicate bird feathers arranged symmetrically behind this skull with a central ornament comprised of a chocolate brown roundel in a metal bezel crowned by a decorative fan-like cut metal ornament, the skull and wings further adorned by symetrically placed found metal parts and chains - all topped by an antlered entity from which a scale holds a miniature human "skull" atop a white crystalline mound in its balance is suspenced. Aptly named "Vicious Circle" this assemblage of macabre elements rotates a complete 360 degrees! Size: 10" L x 15.5" W x 25.5" H (25.4 cm x 39.4 cm x 64.8 cm)
About the artist: "A survivor of the Communist era, Valerie Varda [von Sobel] fled her native Hungary during the 1956 uprising against the Soviet regime to settle in Toronto, Canada. She vividly remembers that time. She recalls carrying her younger brother on her back while walking eight miles with her parents through a marsh, to cross the forbidden border to the safety of Austria. After the elation of the escape, there were many months in refugee camps.
Once in the United States, through a fortuitous encounter, she was flown to Los Angeles for a screen test, winning a studio contract, and a first role in "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" with Jimmy Stuart.
In addition to serving in the full time role as Founder and President of the foundation since 1995, Ms. Sobel is recognized as the 'cover girl' of "Advanced Style: Older and Wiser" by Ari Seth Cohen, a celebration of women over the age of 60 with unique personal style. She has appeared in numerous lifestyle and philanthropic magazine articles, and is sought after by leading fashion photographers and artists.
Her recent exhibition at Denenberg Fine Arts, Inc. attracted international recognition, and even a congratulatory note from British royalty." (Denenberg Fine Arts)
