Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivia culture, ca. 3500 to 1500 BCE. A gorgeous hand-carved Spondylus shell amulet in the shape of a long zoomorphic creature with a large integral hand-drilled loop on its back. The frontside has a creamy white surface with a maroon and yellow backside, showcasing the natural coloration of the Spondylus shell. The front legs and head jut forward, with nice details incised on the paws, ears and eyes. The long body of the animal, its circular eyes, and pointed ears suggests that it represents a coatimundi, a raccoon like creature that was easily tamed by ancient Valdivian people. Spondylus amulets had spiritual significance and power in many Andean cultures, and this striking effigy was no exception. See the extended description below for more about the meaning of the Spondylus shell. Size: 1.75" W x 5.56" H (4.4 cm x 14.1 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand
The Spondylus shell is native to Ecuador and was considered sacred by many cultures and divers gathered the Spondylus from the depths of the Pacific ocean as offerings to Pachamama, goddess of fertility. The Spondylus carries numerous symbolic meanings; a symbol of fertility and elite social status, it was also believed to be an omen of rain, warning the indigenous people of El Nino. In fact, the Spondylus shell only appears when the water becomes warmer during December- the time of the El Nino Current – immediately before the rainy season. An amulet carved from the Spondylus would have spiritual power that the wearer would receive.
