North America, United States, 1858. A Hardee hat, also nicknamed the "Jeff Davis" and known as the Model 1858 Dress hat, worn by both Confederate and Union Army soldiers in the American Civil War, particularly those of the Union Army's Iron Brigade who were also known as the "Black Hats" for obvious reasons. Interestingly, while this hat was also worn by Confederate soldiers, the black felt was deemed to be too uncomfortable for the South as it was heavy and retained heat. This hat is also furnished with a silvered copper infantry horn adornment and eagle side plate, and pinned on the left as was customary for infantry soldiers. The wool cord is sky blue which is consistent with Hardee hats worn by infantry soldiers. Size: 13.625" L x 9.625" W x 5.875" H (34.6 cm x 24.4 cm x 14.9 cm); opening for head 7.25" L x 6" W (18.4 cm x 15.2 cm)
This hat was named for William J. Hardee, a U.S. Army officer from 1838 until 1861. Commandant of Cadets at West Point from 1856 to 1860, Hardee was lieutenant colonel of the 1st U.S. Cavalry until just prior to the war. Hardee also published "Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics for the Exercise and Manoeuvres of Troops When Acting as Light Infantry or Riflemen" in 1855. This book was popularly dubbed "Hardee's Tactics" and it was a drill manual used by both sides of the Civil War. During the Civil War, Hardee joined the Confederate States Army in March 1861 and eventually became a lieutenant general and corps commander.
