Ancient Near East, western Iran or Iraq, Umayyad Caliphate or early Abbasid, ca. 8th to 9th century CE.A gorgeous earthenware jar with an amphora-like shape - a rounded, elongated body, a disc foot, a corseted neck, and a flaring mouth with a thick rim. Two strap handles rise from the top of the shoulder to the middle of the neck. The body is decorated with incised lines that form bands and striations around the body. The remains of applied ceramic on the rim give an idea of applied ornaments that may once have been there - perhaps clusters of grapes, as are known from other vessels from the same time period. The glaze is a beautiful pale, creamy turquoise that has aged to have a sparkling iridescent surface. Size: 7" W x 11.5" H (17.8 cm x 29.2 cm) Size: 7" W x 11.5" H (17.8 cm x 29.2 cm)
Glazed vessels from this time period can sell for tremendous amounts of money - see, for example, a jug that sold at Christie's in 2007 for GBP 614,000 (USD: $814,428) - https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-large-umayyad-or-early-abbasid-green-4979446-details.aspx; another example from the National Museum of Damascus gives an idea of what the applied decoration on the rim may have looked like - http://islamicart.museumwnf.org/database_item.php?id=object;ISL;sy;Mus01;10;en

Condition
Intact, with small losses from glaze. Interesting encrusted surface, with what looks like remains of a netted textile on one side. Three small pieces of pottery on the rim suggest the piece once had a rim. Beautiful craquelure on surface.
