Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi Pueblo, ca. mid-20th century CE; First Nations, Canada, Cree/Metis, ca. early 20th to mid-20th century CE. A Metis wool sash and a Hopi brocaded sash panel. The Metis sash was probably made in England and imported or made on industrial looms-featuring traditional red with long fringed ends. Originally crafted using First Nations techniques with European wool, these sashes were practical tools - serving as ropes, tumplines, and more - before becoming a symbol of the Metis Nation, worn proudly at gatherings and ceremonies. The Hopi textile is a plain-weave white panel with vibrant yarn decoration. Used in Kachina ceremonies, it would have been one of two panels sewn together along the white edge. The "brocade" is actually a supplementary weft wrapping technique (soumak) - with motifs often symbolizing water and rain. Size: Hopi panel: 41" L x 12" W (104.1 cm x 30.5 cm) - Metis sash: 140" L x 9" W (355.6 cm x 22.9 cm)
Provenance: private Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, USA collection

Some fading and discoloration to both. Hopi sash is intact with some yellow stains along the white fringe. Metis sash has an old repair with red thread, with some pulls and losses to fiber along the edge, but otherwise good condition.
