Harold Dow Bugbee (American, 1900-1963). Two graphite drawings. Ca. 1950s. Both signed "H.D. Bugbee" on lower right. A wonderful pair of drawings by Western artist Harold Dow Bugbee. One depicts a herd of wild horses galloping across the land, while the other presents a herd of lively pronghorns. Bugbee sketched his first ranch scenes as a boy living on a ranch in Clarendon, Texas. His role model was legendary Charles M. Russell of Montana in the northern Great Plains, and Bugbee thought of himself as the southern complement to Russell. Two of his patrons were historian J. Evetts Haley and Amarillo mayor Ernest O. Thompson. In addition to being an artist, Bugbee was a curator of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas from 1951 until he passed away in 1963. Bugbee's most impressive mural entitled "The Cattleman" is housed in this museum. Size of frames: 11.125" L x 14.125" W (28.3 cm x 35.9 cm)
