Native American, southwestern United States, Zuni, ca. 20th century CE. A striking pair of high quality silver, copper, and turquoise necklaces. The first displays a 90% silver lady bug pendant with a large, ovoid body, six slender, twisted legs, a pair of antennae, two spherical silver eyes, two curved silver risen lines that delineate the wings, and ten copper spots. On its back, it is skillfully incised with several starburst motifs along with the initials "CEB", perhaps a signature of the artist, and the number "925", which generally indicates sterling silver. Silver quality: ladybug: 90%, ladybug beads: 93.2%, owl necklace: 94%, owl: 94.8%; Size of ladybug necklace: 27" L (68.6 cm); Size of ladybug pendant: 1.5" W x 1.75" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm); Size of turquoise beads: 0.25" W x 0.5" L (0.6 cm x 1.3 cm); Weight of ladybug necklace: 43.7 grams; Weight of ladybug: 18 grams; Size of owl necklace: 14.5" L (36.8 cm); Size of owl pendant: 0.625" W x 1.375" H (1.6 cm x 3.5 cm); Weight of owl necklace: 17.1 grams; Weight of owl: 4.6 grams
The adorable insect is at the center of sixteen turquoise nugget beads strung with sixty-four 93% silver spherical beads and sixteen rectangular copper beads. The hook and loop at the each end of the strand allow it to be worn as a necklace. The second necklace consists of a 94% silver wire with hooks at each end for suspension. The wire is incised with spiraling striations to make it appear twisted. An elegant pendant of an owl, who is composed of lustrous brown, tan, white, and black shell and has one turquoise leg, rests at the center. The owl's backing is 94.8% silver.
