Central Africa, Angola, Zambia, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chokwe peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A lovely pair of carved-wood hair combs, or cisakulo, both presenting in rectangular form with long teeth and boasting a lustrous burnish. Enveloped in a rich hue of chocolate brown, the taller comb features a lovely figural handle with a long cylindrical neck and a small pointed head displaying sunken coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a flat nose, a minimalistic mouth, and a full head of carefully incised hair. The rectangular panel below the handle is carved with a diamond-shaped latticework design with some shapes filled with horizontal or vertical striations. Alternatively, the smaller comb has only a rectangular panel as a handle, though the top of it is sculpted into three concave curves, perhaps where fingers are meant to fit. Enveloped in a shade of deep sienna, the comb is embellished on one side by six quadrilaterals with concave sides, filled with grid patterns, and arranged two by three to create a phytomorphic motif. A diamond shape flanked by two inward facing triangles all filled with a crisscross pattern adorns the other side. Size of largest: 2.6" W x 6.7" H (6.6 cm x 17 cm)
These combs were collected by Antonio Barros de Machado (1912 to 2002), who was the son of Bernardino Luís Machado Guimaraes (the third and eighth president of Portugal), as well as one of the precursors of scientific speleology in Portugal.
Provenance: private USA collection, collected with late husband Edward. S. Ross, with the California Academy of Sciences in the 1970s and 1980s; ex-Antonio Barros de Machado collection,
