Native American, Plains, Apache and Sioux, late 19th C. Two beaded deer hide pouches, the rounded example likely Apache with a star-shaped motif on each side, one in cornflower blue, red, and navy blue, the other in cornflower blue, spring green, translucent red, and translucent rose. A lovely fringe trim graces the periphery. The other bag, likely of Sioux origin, has a beaded trim along the flap and surrounding the rectangular body of the bag. The flap features a beaded band of navy blue squares on a white ground as well as a single strand of an alternating navy blue and white pattern. This same pattern adorns the lower end of the pouch, and translucent green beads line the sides of it. Below is a fringe of 15 quill wrapped hide pieces with a generous hide fringe following underneath. The body of the bag is adorned with horizontal bands wrapped with red-dyed quills to match the fringe below. A lovely pair! Size: Sioux pouch measures3.5" W x 9.875" H (8.9 cm x 25.1 cm); Apache pouch measures 4.875" W x 5" H (12.4 cm x 12.7 cm)

Condition
Expected age wear to the hide of both pouches with normal darkening and dessication. The Apache pouch shows a few missing translucent rose beads and minute loss to the hide lining the opening, but is otherwise very good. The Sioux bag shows losses to some of the quill wrappings and similar age wear to the hide.
