Herrmann J. Meyer and his father Joseph Meyer were German publishers of "Meyer's Universum" - an illustrated travel series. Joseph Meyer sent his son to the US where he established a publishing house in New York City. Herrmann then published an American edition of Universum as well as a new series he called "The United States Illustrated" edited by Charles A. Dana, editor of the New York Tribune. When this series did not achieve success, Meyer returned to Germany and took the helm of Bibliographischen Institut when his father passed away. The prints in Meyer's publications are generally finely engraved renderings based on firsthand sketches.
