Northern Europe, England, London, ca. 1735; North America, United States, Massachusetts, Boston, ca. 1806; Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, ca. 1833 CE. A wonderful collection of 3 reference books: 2 dictionaries and an encyclopedia. The first book is the seventh edition of "An Universal Etymological English Dictionary; comprehending the derivations of the generality of words in the English tongue…" by Nathaniel Bailey, printed in London for J. J. and P. Knapton, et al. in the year 1735. The second dictionary is the second American edition of "Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language in Miniature to which are added an alphabetical account of the Heathen Deities and a Copious Chronological Table of Remarkable Events, Discoveries, and Inventions" by Reverend Joseph Hamilton and published by W. Andrews in Boston in 1806. Size of largest (1735 dictionary): 5.25" L x 2.5" W x 8" H (13.3 cm x 6.4 cm x 20.3 cm)
Last is the fourth edition of "A New Family Encyclopedia; or Compendium of Universal Knowledge" by Charles A. Goodrich and published in Philadelphia in 1833 (468 pp.). The encyclopedia is illustrated throughout with charming wood cuts. All 3 provide a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of a past era!

Condition
"Johnson's Dictionary" has detached front cover with area of loss near center and is missing the last 9 pages - possibly others missing throughout. All have significant wear to covers and bindings. "Johnson's" and the encyclopedia have stains, foxing, and notations to pages, but the 1735 dictionary is in relatively good condition with some light folding to a few pages. Text legible in all 3.
