Tsuchiya Koitsu (given name Koichi) was born near Hamamatsu and studied under Matsuzaki who was a carver for Kobayashi Kiyochika. Kiyochika welcomed Koitsu into his home where he would study for 19 years. Koitsu later met Watanabe Shozaburo at an exhibition of Kiyochika's prints, and following this, he designed figurative landscape moku-hanga that were published by Watanabe, Kawaguchi, and Doi - beginning in 1932. As we see in this piece, Koitsu employed a dramatic contrast between light and dark as well as a vibrant color palette in order to evoke the various moods of the seasons in his landscape scenes.
