John Harris (British, 1791-1873) after George Catlin (American, 1796-1872), three hand-colored lithographs from James Cowles Prichard's "Natural History of Man", Hippolyte Balliere, London, 1844. "Hee-doh-gee-ats, a Chinook Boy" depicts a young teenage boy wearing a beige fur coat, a red sash, and beaded necklaces. "Not-een-a-alom - The Strong Wind" wears opulent garments of jewel tone red, blue, and gold hues - a feathered headdress, earrings, and beaded sash/necklaces; his face is dramatically painted, and he holds an intimidating weapon. The three young females - "Ne-bet-neuh-qua. Wos-ab-e-neuh-qua. Nib-nab-i-quah" - face the viewer with centrally-parted black hair framing their red-painted faces and wear beautiful beaded deer hide dresses. Size: 5.5" W x 8.875" H (14 cm x 22.5 cm); two images with grey mats 11" W x 14.5" H (27.9 cm x 36.8 cm); one with black mat 14.375" W x 17.75" H (36.5 cm x 45.1 cm)
About the same time that George Catlin was having his portfolio produced, James Prichard borrowed a number of the images of Catlin’s paintings for his publication entitled, "The Natural History of Man". As he began the research for his study in 1813, Prichard's original thesis was that originally the human race was dark-skinned. In time, he modified his view, but still insisted that the human race belonged to one great family. Prichard meticulously researched various races of humankind, and his work provided a foundation for modern ethnological science. Prichard included fine portraits of different human races after various artists' original paintings and drawings - most by George Catlin who based his compositions on first-hand field studies of Plains Indians from the mid-nineteenth century.
