Tobin Sprout (American, b. 1955). "School House Window" oil on canvas, 1989. Signed "SPROUT 1989" on lower right. Tobin Sprout's striking painting of the famous one-room school house (the old Shetland School also known as Shetland House School) built in 1871 on the road that is now known as M-22 near Little Traverse Lake in Cleveland Township, Leelanau County, Michigan. Sprout has captured a striking view of this one-room school house, one of the few that has not disappeared from the American rural landscape. His composition focuses on one of its white windows furnished with billowing curtains and surrounded by red siding. Interestingly, during the late 20th century, this charming red school house became an antique shop that was called School Bell and Apple. Besides being an accomplished professional artist, Tobin Sprout is also a member (guitar, piano, vocals, and songwriter) of the American Indie rock band Guided by Voices. Size: 16" L x 11.875" W (40.6 cm x 30.2 cm)
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Tobin Sprout studied graphic design and illustration at Ohio University. His paintings are coveted by many admiring collectors, including the American actor Tim Allen.
