Pre-Columbian, central highlands of Peru or Lake Titicaca region of Bolivia, Huari (Wari) or Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) respectively, Middle Horizon, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A wonderful pottery kero used for the consumption of chicha or corn beer during ceremonies and everyday gatherings. Adorned in hues of burnt sienna, apricot, cream, and black, the ancient vessel presents impressively thin walls that form a concave body and a dramatically wide, flared rim, all sitting upon a flat, circular base. The exterior of the kero boasts an elaborate decorative program consisting of 2 horizontal registers divided by a risen, black band that encircles the midsection. A pair of stylized birds are displayed at the top register, each shown in profile and exhibiting slender legs, a triangular wing, a circular body, a lengthy neck, and a downward facing head with a large, target-motif eye and an open beak. The field is embellished with geometric motifs. The bottom register showcases an abstract pattern of diagonal, spiral, and zigzag striations. Size: 5.9" W x 6.2" H (15 cm x 15.7 cm)
