Europe, France, ca. 18th century. Three hand-colored French etchings finished with engraving after paintings by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) - first painter to King Louis XIV - who created a great number of works for the Palace of Versailles during the 17th century. Titles of these etchings include: "Jonction des deux Mers 1667" (Junction of the Two Rivers 1667); "Etablissemens de L'Hotel Royal des Invalides 1674" (Establishment of the Royal Residence of the Invalids 1674); and "Reparation de l'attentat des Corses 1666 (Repair of the Attach of Corses 1666). Each features a central medallion with a figural scene - i.e. Neptune representing the ocean shaking hands with the personification of the Mediterranean sea - flanked by two atlantes and surmounted by a pediment adorned with a mask, a pair of putti, floral garlands, and a basket of fruit. About the artist: "Charles Le Brun (1619–1690) was the dominant painter, designer, and artistic authority during the first decades of Louis XIV’s reign. In addition to being premier peintre du roi (first painter to the king), he directed the Gobelins Manufactory, supervising dozens of artists and craftsmen in the production of tapestries and other furnishings for the decoration of royal palaces. Le Brun was also the leader of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, where he gave several highly influential lectures.
The early decorative programs at Versailles were largely the work of Le Brun. They included designs for garden statues, fountains, and festivals and culminated in the monumental paintings on the ceiling of the Hall of Mirrors. After the death of Colbert in 1683, he received no more major commissions but continued to occupy a central position in the academy."
