Central and Southeastern Europe centered on modern day Bulgaria, Thracian, 5th to 4th century BCE. In a word - EXQUISITE! This sizeable attachment comprised of 20K+ gold (89.35% gold) is so elaborate with an abstract decorative program created in repousse presenting five petaled floral blossoms, each one framed by a fretted border, surrounded by curvaceous bird-like forms which are very abstract, though their sinuous beak and feather frills possess avian qualities. On the verso is a curved band, ideal for attachment to clothing or suspension as an ornament. Given that this piece is so skillfully decorated with extensive nature-inspired imagery, one cannot help but wonder for whom it was created - perhaps a royal who adoredflora and fauna. Size: 2.25" W x 1.875" H (5.7 cm x 4.8 cm); 2.5" H (6.4 cm) on included custom stand. Weight: 21.9 grams.
The Thracians were skilled craftsmen and created lavish gold and silver jewelry as well as vessels, masks, and rhytons. Interestingly, scholars believe that the Thracians buried luxurious hoards of precious objects as a ritualistic practice as well as as a security measure to hide them from their enemies. We know of more than 80 Thracian treasures that have been excavated in Bulgaria, the cradle of Thracian civilization.
