Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan, ca. 150 to 650 CE. A stunning openwork pottery leg of a vessel of rectangular form featuring a central figure, perhaps a priest, standing in a temple. The elaborate figure displays a slender body with arms folded across his chest as he stands atop straight legs. Heavily adorned, the priest wears anklets, a heavy necklace, a complex loincloth, huge earspools, and an intricate headdress with a knotted motif. He gazes forward from large eyes above a protruding nose, and a closed mouth. His hips and legs are flanked by bracket-like designs, while a series of 3 stairs is shown below his feet. Note the artist's careful attention to detail as evident in his delineated fingers and toes, as well as the intricate rendering of his attire. The extraordinary size and complexity of this leg indicates that it likely came from an enormous vessel of great importance. Size: 5" W x 8.9" H (12.7 cm x 22.6 cm); 9.2" H (23.4 cm) on included custom stand.
