Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan, Classic Period, ca. 450 to 650 CE. A captivating standing figure of a highly stylized form that is hand-carved from mottled, forest green stone with dark green and light gray inclusions. The planar figure stands with a rigid pose while holding both arms tightly against a tapered waistline. A deep, string-cut groove delineated both legs, both arms, and the waistline as well as the concave sides of the neck. The protruding, U-shaped head features horizontal, slit-form eyes and lips, a triangular nose, convex cheeks, and circular ear spools, all beneath a wide headdress bearing two lateral flanges flanking a top panel. Size: 1.7" W x 4.625" H (4.3 cm x 11.7 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Teotihuacan was at one time the largest city in the Pre-Columbian world, famous for its pyramids (Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon) as well as the Great Compound with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (aka Temple of the Plumed Serpent) punctuating the Avenue of the Dead. Stone figures like this example are perhaps the best-known works of Teotihuacan art. Examples like this figure from Teotihuacan often have idealized features (rather than individual depictions) and calm expressions, with simple lines used economically in order to create powerful effigies without excessive detail.
