Greek, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. A statuesque mold-made terracotta female - perhaps Harmonia given her serpentine necklace - standing upon an integral rectangular pedestal with her curvaceous figure swaying in an elegant S-curve - her left knee lifted, her right hip flexed, and her arms raised as if dancing to some melodious music. While her torso is visible with exposed breasts, belly button, and upper buttocks, flowing drapery sensuously wraps around her hips and lower body, and a himation cascades over her left shoulder falling all the way to her ankles. Her oval face presents delicate features framed by an elaborate coiffure with an upraised, almost bow-shaped front section (very similar to the style of the later Venus Mazarin's coiffure) and a low chignon at the nape of her neck - truly an ideal of feminine beauty. She wears the Necklace of Harmonia created by Hephaestus which simultaneously brought misfortune as well as eternal beauty to its owner. For more about this magical object, see extended description below. Size: 20.625" H (52.4 cm)
In Greek mythology, the necklace of Harmonia brought bad luck to anyone who possessed it. Hephaestus, the blacksmith god, created it when he found that his wife Aphrodite, the goddess of love, had had an affair with Ares, the god of war. Hephaestus wanted to bring shame upon the couple and curse any child brought about by their union. Harmonia was born to Aphrodite and Ares and when she was to marry Cadmus, the founder of Thebes, he gave her the necklace as a gift. Strangely, while the necklace - made of jewels and gold and assuming the form of two serpents creating a clasp with their mouths - was cursed by Haphaestus to bring ill fortune to anyone who wore it, it also perversely brought about eternal youth and beauty to its owner.
