Magna Graecia, Apulia, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful red-figure skyphos featuring a winged Eros, the god of love, standing in contrapposto, turned and facing his right - his nude muscular physique delineated with fine line brushwork - holding a filet in his outstretched right hand and a tympanum in his left hand. Though nude, he does wear sandals, a diadem, wristlets, and a blossoming tendril across his chest. The attention to these details as well as the plumage of Eros' wings is fabulous, and skillfully applied fugitive white pigment delineates many of these wonderful attributes. Side B features a draped male figure, also wearing a headband/diadem and sandals, as well as holding a walking stick. In addition to this figural iconography, stylized complex palmettes adorn the areas beneath the loop handles, and the field is bordered by a band of tongues above and a band of wave motifs below. Size: 8.375" W handlespan x 5.75" H (21.3 cm x 14.6 cm)

Condition
One triangular piece reattached to the rim - otherwise intact - with possible repainting to the section of tongue motifs (about 1.5") and tips of the palmette leaf on that small reattached piece. Expected age wear but the imagery is still vivid with nice detail and fugitive paint. Wonderful root marks visible on interior. Old collection labels on the underside.
