Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A sizeable hollow-form terracotta male figure standing upon ample outspread legs with attenuated arms held out beside his body. Characteristic of the Colima, the shaft tomb figure possesses a wide torso, and is nude with delineated nipples, paunch, genitalia, fingers, and toes. Though nude, he is highly decorated with shoulder pellets, multiple earrings adorning his tab-shaped ears, and a nice nose ring. In addition, there are traces of white-painted armlets and loin cloth (though this garment still reveals his male genitalia). What's more, his visage - comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a pointy nose, and large parted lips as if speaking, chanting, or singing - presents with great personality. Painted in a rich red slip, this is a wonderful example from ancient West Mexico! Size: 12" W x 18.5" H (30.5 cm x 47 cm)
Colima, located on Mexico's southwestern coast, was a shaft tomb culture during this period, along with neighbors to the north in Jalisco and Nayarit. In this culture, the deceased were buried down shafts - 3 to 20 meters deep - that were dug vertically or nearly vertically through the volcanic tuff that makes up the geology of the region. The base of the shaft would open into one or more horizontal chambers with a low ceiling. These shafts were almost always dug beneath a dwelling, and likely used as family mausoleums, housing the remains of many related individuals. This figure was probably intended to be placed in one of those mausoleums to mediate between the worlds of the living and the deceased.
