Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. An intriguing figural post that is hand-carved from chocolate-hued wood and surmounted with a standing figure. The anthropomorphic effigy is of a highly stylized form, bearing attenuated legs and lengthy arms with hands held atop the chest, and the gently sloped shoulders are accented with a beaded necklace draped atop the clavicle. The enlarged head features a triangular visage with almond-shaped eyes, prominent nasolabial folds, tab-shaped ears, and a grinning mouth, all beneath a minimalist rectangular cap. The post atop which the figure stands bears a triangular profile that gently tapers to a blunted bottom point. Woven textile wrappings are visible on one area of the obverse, suggesting that this post was a funerary marker or perhaps a burial offering left with a deceased individual. Size: 3.8" W x 26.875" H (9.7 cm x 68.3 cm); 27.375" H (69.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Several stable hairline fissures to figure and post body, with disintegration to most original textile wrappings, nicks and abrasions to lower post tip and body, and minor softening to some figural details, otherwise intact and excellent.
